Warning over stolen fireworks

POLICE in Sussex have issued a warning to local people who will be holding private bonfire celebrations on Monday. A cache of professional-grade fireworks were stolen from the Barcombe Bonfire Society on Wednesday and officers are concerned that they could fall into the hands of children. Fireworks and flares to the value of 200 were taken from a container at the Spithurst Road farm in Barcombe. Several have fuses that will explode when lit. PC Andrew Kidd of Lewes police said: 'A large number of fireworks have been stolen and there is the danger that if these are sold on and fall into the wrong hands, a serious injury could result. 'If you are offered such items or if you have information which will help to return the items back the rightful owners, please contact Sussex Police or call Crimestoppers as soon as possible. Police also received reports on Hallowe en night (Wednesday) of youngsters lighting and throwing fireworks in the streets. A householder in Cricketfield, Newick, called police after spotting youths throwing fireworks outside her house. Teenagers wearing Hallowe en masks were spotted letting off fireworks in Eridge Green, Lewes, and a group of ten youths were seen throwing fireworks in High Street, Heathfield, at 9.20pm. Youths were also seen letting off fireworks on the A259 at Capel Avenue in Seaford.
