Hastings Wonky Women celebrate
This local branch of the Women’s Institute (WI) was started to reflect the diverse and idiosyncratic nature of St Leonards and Hastings and branch member Hazel Stewart says their aim is to adopt a contemporary approach to traditional women’s groups. “It’s non-competitive, non-judgmental, a safe space for debate and discussion, education, skill-sharing and fun,” she said.”And its affiliated to an established national women’s organisation that has no party political or religious agenda but offers the collective strength of 208,000 members.”
Since it was established five years ago the ladies have raised over £8,000 for several local charities, Pestalozzi, FSN Dragonflies, My Time and Active Arts.

Hazel added: “The Wonky WI has done a lot for the local community while also having some fun, making new friends and enjoying a large range of different speakers some having been very thought provoking and informative. At the meeting to celebrate the 5th Anniversary we presented cheques for £500 each of our charities this year My Time and Active Arts.”
The ladies are in the process of organising their third Bazaar which will take place at St Johns Church Hall, Brittany Road, St Leonards on October 22, 11.30am.
